Pain Relief Through Trigger Point Injections

A trigger point is an area of muscular pain and tightness, often with a hard knot which hurts more when pressed on and may radiate pain. A trigger point injection is a medication (a local anesthetic, anti-inflammatory, or combination of both) which is injected directly into the site of a trigger point.

According to the American Family Physician journal, trigger point injections are one of the most effective treatments for relieving the pain and tension of trigger points. Trigger point injections can treat painful muscle spasms in the neck, shoulder, back and pelvis. They can also be useful in relieving pain and tension related to myofascial pain syndrome, fibromyalgia, temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJ), tension headaches, and other conditions as recommended by your doctor.

This procedure is short (five to ten minutes) and can be carried out at the Nevada Pain Care office. Some individuals get immediate, long term relief from a trigger point injection, especially if they discontinue the movements that may have caused the initial muscle spasm. Trigger point injections for conditions such as fibromyalgia and myofascial pain syndrome may provide temporary relief, and can be repeated at regular intervals or as needed.
