We Can Help: Headaches

From aching to throbbing, sharp to explosive, headache pain can be debilitating and cause disruption in your life. Getting an accurate diagnosis for your chronic headaches by an expert such as the doctors at Nevada Pain Care is important, as there are several different types that require different treatment plans.

Headache Types

  • Tension Headaches
  • Cluster Headaches
  • Migraine Headaches
  • Occipital Neuralgia

Tension Headaches – These are the most common type of headaches and are caused by muscle tension. These headaches can come and go throughout the day.

Migraine Headaches – These headaches can last for several hours to a few days, and usually include sensitivity to light, noise, smells, nausea and/or vomiting, or stomach upset or pain. They often happen once a month or more.

Cluster Headaches – These headaches often happen in groups, called clusters, and have been described as causing very intense pain. The cluster can lasts weeks or months, and for most people is followed by a headache-free period. During a cluster, headaches can occur one to many times in a day and last from a few minutes to several hours. These headaches often occur suddenly, on one side of the head, focused behind the eye, and can be accompanied by a bloodshot or tearing eye, or runny nose on the same side of the head.

Occipital Neuralgia – Headaches related to occipital neuralgia are caused by injury or disease of the nerves that run from the base of the neck through the scalp. These headaches typically start at the base of the neck and radiate to the scalp.

To properly diagnose your chronic headaches, your doctor will carry out an in-depth medical evaluation, including taking your medical history, doing a physical exam, and any needed tests to rule out underlying diseases. It is helpful if you track information about your headaches and bring it to your appointment, so that your doctor has more information.

Depending on your headache diagnosis and specific symptoms, a variety of treatments may help reduce the frequency and severity of your headaches. The doctors at Nevada Pain Care will develop a comprehensive treatment plan that may include chiropractic care, medications, trigger point injections, nerve blocks, radiofrequency ablation, or occipital nerve stimulation.
